Samsonite begins in Denver, Colorado, where Jesse Shwayder founded the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company in 1910. The starting point matters because this was not a fashion-label route into luggage; it began with trunks built for travel.
The Samsonite trademark was first used in 1941, and in 1965 the company took the name of its best-selling case. In 1974, the brand introduced its first wheeled suitcase, a detail that still shapes how people think about Samsonite in airports.
