How 501 became Levi's anchor fit
Levi's begins with San Francisco, not with a fashion season. In 1853, Levi Strauss opened a dry goods business during the gold rush, when durable supplies mattered more than display.
The turning point came in 1873, when Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis received the US patent for copper-riveted work trousers. The riveted waist overall received the lot number 501 in 1890, and the Red Tab was added to the back pocket in 1936 so the jeans could be recognized from a distance.
For a Tbilisi shopper, that history is useful because Levi's is easiest to read through fit numbers and denim pieces. Previous-season and outlet-specific drops may include 501, 511, 512, 721, trucker jackets, Western shirts and Batwing logo tees, but colours and sizes change with each delivery.
