The brand
From Antwerp classrooms to football stadium shows
Dirk Bikkembergs graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1982, before attaching his name to a label that would not treat sport as background clothing. When the Bikkembergs label was introduced in 1996, football was already the centre of the idea.
The point was the body of the footballer: compact layers, ribbed knits, track shapes and underwear waistbands made to be seen. Bikkembergs also became the first fashion designer allowed to hold a show inside a football stadium, so the setting was not decoration; it was the argument.
